and instead of cut tupping and putting them on a budget, barak obama said give us another one and harry reid you have to - on >> john: would you support the debt ceiling. >> i don't support not dealing with the program. this whole, the way this town works and the fiscal cliff deal, the only winners were washington, they got more money and the folk necessary ohio lost rev snaul business owners had money taken from them. politicians in washington win. 10 or 7 of the 10 wealthiest counties are in the dc area . mr. van hollen res one of those areas it is about time to say stop the madness and cut up the credit card and we want a solution. >> guest: a couple of points. sequester was replaced two months and not kicked down the road. >> guest: it was kicked down the road. >> guest: no, jim, you have to get the facts straight. >> guest: i have them straight. >> guest: we have 24 billion in deficit reduction. halfful it was cut and the model going forward is to continue to do balanced approach of cuts and revenue. america didn't go over the fiscal cliff. i know you voted not to go over the fiscal cli

's, of course, what president obama campaigned on and he got that as a part of the fiscal cliff deal. moving forward i think you can expect to see president obama hitting the road, taking his message on the road, traveling to different states and making the argument if the debt ceiling isn't increased, the economy will suffer. you hear him say he's not going to negotiate with republicans. what specifically does that mean, we'll have to wait and see because, of course, house speaker john boehner is also taking a very hard line. he has said that he's not going to negotiate with president obama in these one-on-one sessions that we've seen in the past budget battles and he believes he's got leverage with the debt ceiling. but i think the white house will press on whatever package they agree upon to include some new revenues as well as spending cuts, of course, that is the big issue, republicans would like it to all come from spending cuts. so, it's undoubtedly going to be another knockdown, dragdown fight, alex, but it will be interesting to see who is negotiating with whom in the coming rounds

they are innocent. the former republican senator charles hegel is expected to be nominated by president obama as the next defense secretary. he has proven to be a controversial choice. >> he was a member of the u.s. senate before retiring in 2009. he spent the last three years advising president obama on key issues. on the iraq war he said there is no strategy. on the issue of iran's nuclear ambitions, how is it that we can have nuclear-weapons -- they cannot have nuclear-weapons but our allies can. he called for talks, and that raised a red flag, worried about how he could be in charge of a one-on-one military relationship between the u.s. and israel. president obama arrived back from hawaii, ready to get back to business. he is looking for a bipartisan pay. he is also looking for a fight. republicans would have none of susan rice because of the way she handled the been gauzy situation. -- been gauzy -- benghazi situation. if you wish to vote against him, hats off to you. mitch mcconnell has been appearing on sunday broadcasts. agel comesen chuck hege up, he will be given tough but fair ques

no way. and, remember this? >> barack obama is the worst president in history. >> that's congressman ben quail walking off camera. now, he's walking out of the capitol. one of the many members of congress we won't see this term, but whom you will see in the side show. we begin with whether republicans are building the deficit msnbc chief economist to vice president. >>> gentlemen, allow me to read something to you that was published today. if the on going war between republicans and democrats was really over those future budget deficits, you might consider republicans and dem krats focusing on ways to hold down costs. it's not what this war is about. it's about the size of govt. tea party republicans want the government to be much smaller. jaret, i say yes, but, surely a $16 trillion debt is serious business and requires attention. >> absolutely. in fact, if you look -- i don't really do the pox on both of their discussions. if you look at it, it's accurate. if you look at the offer that the president made in mid-december, or if you look at the president's budget, he actually accomplishe

launches president obama's formal inauguration. joining me now, former pennsylvania governor ed rendell, john rosenthal, chairman of stop handgun violence and msnbc contributor michael smer csmerkonish. is this how we see the conversation move forward, with groups backed by every day citizens on either side i guess putting if you will their stake in the ground and not letting us forget newtown and the promises made by the administration to put some kind of legislation forward? >> right. the great thing about gabby giffords group is to keep the pressure on. what happens in the horrible mass murders is we all get upset, riled up, wonderful memorial ceremonies and then the pressure eases off as time elapses. well, the gifford group will contribute to a lot of other groups and make sure that that doesn't happen this time. this time, we are all very, very serious about this. and it has to get done and there are common sense things which the american people overwhelmingly support. for instance, making background check mandatory. no more gun show exemptions, no more internet exemptions and sup

day, sooner or later, he is going to say obama had a good idea. >> but what we know is that canter was not interested in finding common ground with the president, but interested in remaking the republican party. as a leader of the so-called "young guns" on the hill, canter was recruiting like-minded candidates for the midterms. he called them, coached them and answered the text messages and raised lots and lots of money tor them and through his pac in 2010, canter donated $657,000 to soon to be new members of the house, and he helped to raise millions more for their campaigns, and when the 112th congress was seated with 87 gop freshmen, eric canter had a lot of new allies. his party was in the majority and he was not the whip anymore, but the leader with influence rivalling john boehner's. for his part, joe biden increasingly became president obama's go-to fix it man with a hand from iraq to afghanistan to the new banking regulations to the auto bailout, and he is now regarded by some as the most influential vice president ever, and the last up with was dick cheney which is why the

to demand. who blinks first? >> that's the key question. president obama has shown new toughness in his negotiations with congress since his re-election, coming off a stronger than expected victory, of course, and also feeling like he learned some lessons from past fights with the congress. he has said he will not negotiate around the debt ceiling. at the same time, republicans feel like they have much more leverage in this debate. they felt like they were kind of on the losing end of the last fiscal cliff fight with their position that could have caused some tax increases on everyone, including middle class americans. so they were in a tough spot. they feel like this is an issue where they have more public support. the issue that we need to cut spending and that we shouldn't just keep raising the debt ceiling. so those are the dynamics going into that fight. add into that that speaker boehner is in a somewhat weakened position coming out of a tighter than expected fight for him to be reelected speaker. he will be speaker again but had to overcome some dissension in his own ranks to get

down to a reasonable level. it is growing .25% under obama. -- 25% under obama. that is an unsustainable level. it is choking the private sector of this country. >> president obama has vowed not to negotiate over the debt ceiling again. we hear from minority leader nancy pelosi. the congresswoman from california. she was on "face the nation." >> speaker boehner says we need to match every dollar that goes to raising the debt ceiling. we need to match every dollar that goes into raising the debt ceiling with at least one dollar spending cuts. would you support cuts that high? >> these two things should not be related. we should subject every dollar we spend to the harshest scrutiny. if the taxpayer getting his or her dollars worth for that spending? that is a judgment we have to make. as we make cuts to reduce spending. having nothing to do with whether the full faith and credit of the us should be jeopardized. resulted in the downgrade of our rating. it is a fundamental discussion. should we cut spending to raise the debt ceiling? it sounds logical. the debt cei

.s. senator chuck hagel. in four hours, president obama is expected to name hagel as his choice for defense secretary. that nomination could be bruising. hagel is known for being fiercely independent and the loudest outcry could come from hagel's own fellow republicans. they say he's the wrong choice to oversee the military. the combat veteran, who was badly wounded in vietnam, is openly wary of armed conflict. >> the pain, and we didn't have any medics there with us, and we did have some guys, again, that i think were in pretty bad shape. the morphine and everything was used for them. >> you know, if i ever get out of all this, i am going to do everything i can to assure that war is a last resort. that we, a nation, a people, calls upon to settle a dispute. the horror of it, the pain of it, the suffering of it. >> hagel won two purple hearts for his service in vietnam. he also saved the life of his brother, who was fighting alongside him. hagel has also long called for cuts in defense spending. national correspondent jim acosta is on capitol hill to set the stage. jim, some republicans say

. president obama is announcing his new cabinet choices that will shape the future of the u.s. military as well as defense policy and intelligence gathering. the next hour, two more cabinet nominees will be named. former senator chuck hagel for defense secretary and homeland security adviser john brennan for cia director. he has already picked senator john kerry as his nominee for secretary of state. president's choice, chuck hagel for defense secretary already coming under some fire. some republicans point to comments that hagel made back in 2007, that they perceive as anti-jewish. here is how south carolina lindsey graham described the decision to nominate hagel. >> this is an in-your-face nomination by the president to all of us who are supportive of israel. i don't know what his management experience is regarding the pentagon. little, if any. i think it's an incredibly controversial choice. and it looks like the second term of barack obama is going to be an in-your-face term. >> want to bring in our white house correspondent brianna keilar. we no that the white house has been callin

, that one vote could be important. host: and facebook, it, president obama thought raising the debt ceiling was a bad idea -- facebook comment, president obama thought raising the debt ceiling was a bad idea when bush was president and said he would not vote for it, but later voted present. guest: with this a filibuster debate that is going on now in the senate between the republicans and democrats, if you go back and read the comments, they were reversed in 2005 when the democrats were filibustering george bush's traditional nominations. i think it is important to do these things on their merits. i think senator obama's vote was a mistake. if there is any truth in this town, it is that there is no dearth of blame to go around. host: how much time did you take to consider the caucus? guest: i did not make a decision during the campaign. i was asked a question almost exclusively by washington journalists. i was virtually never ask the question by people in maine. most people in maine did not care. they said, go down there and try to get something done. one guy yelled across the diner, i did

. >> this is just one step in the broader effort to broader opportunity for everyone. >> president obama and the new republican senator from texas, ted cruz. contrary to what you have heard, we did not face up to an economic crisis. all they did was go through another political crisis. but try to pick the winners and losers of the deal. how about the taxpayers. how do they fair? >> rich people who make more than $400,000 will pay more. i suppose the middle class will be somewhat on touched but because of the payroll holiday expiring, middle-class people will be paying more money to. everyone lost and that's the truth. you do this and this goes on with increasing intensity and everyone loses in the end. >> winners and losers? >> the real problem is we have this exploding debt and we are adding $1 trillion per year and it is completely unprecedented. there's no change in sight. this is the debt ceiling debate of july and august 2011 which was supposed to come to grips with spending and our debt. it was punted off until this january. what came out was another probably as a result of the next one. we wi

. let me do that now. today president obama is expected to nominate former republican senator chuck hagel of nebraska as the next defense secretary. hagel, a decorated vietnam combat veteran, would be the first enlisted soldier to hold that cabinet post. his confirmation, however, is -- can you believe this -- shaping up to be a testy battle with the republicans. even though he is a republican. a number of republicans have suggested they will challenge their former colleague with tough questions on his foreign policy record. >> his views with regard to israel, for example, and iran and all the other positions that he's taken over the years will be, you know, i think very much a matter of discussion during the confirmation process. >> so you're not predicting smooth sailing for chuck hagel? >> i think it will be a lot of tough questions of senator hagel, but he'll be treated fairly by republican s in the senate. >> quite frankly, chuck hagel is out of the mainstream of thinking i believe on most issues regarding foreign policy. i expect the president to nominate people different than

on a budget barack obama says give us a new credit card and by the way, harry reid you don't have to pass a budget in three years. this is crazy. >> would you support this year letting the debt ceiling deadline last? >> what i won't support is not dealing with the problem. americans sent us here to deal with the problem. the way this town works this fiscal cliff deal the only winners in the fiscal cliff deal were washington. they got more money. the folks i represent in the fourth district of ohio they lost revenue, small business owners had money taken from them. washington always wins and the politicians and consultants and folks here always win. 7 of the 10 wealthiest counties in the country are in the d.c. area. mr. van hollen represents one of those. this area regular americans lose and it is about time we said stop this madness and cut up the credit cards and we want a solution not another washington deal which helps d.c. >> a couple of joints, john. first of all, the sequester was not kicked down the road. it was replaced for two months -- >> replaced means postponed which is what

for the obama administration. sources tell cnn that president obama is likely to nominate chuck hagel as deference secretary next week. hagel is a former republican senator from nebraska who retired in 2009. republican critics have noted that hagel has opposed sanctions against iran and the surge of troops in iraq under the bush administration. he would replace secretary leon panetta. >>> lance armstrong's fall from grace continues. "new york times" reports that he's contemplating publicly admitting that he did dope. sources tell the paper he's considering an admission because he wants to persuade anti-doping officials to get back into cycling. armstro armstrong's attorney tells cnn that his client is not in talks with the u.s. or world doping agencies. throughout the years, armstrong has repeatedly and strongly denied that he used banned performance- performance-enhancing drugs. >>> it's a new year and have some new -- i have some new numbers to share with you now. december's unemployment rate first at 7.8%. another number, 155,000, that's the number of jobs added in december, adding
